UCR Botanic Gardens Fall Market & Plant Sale

Fall is a very popular time of the year for outdoor markets and fairs of all kinds. And when garden opportunities arise we always try to participate in the local favorites. Autumn also happens to be the best time to plant perennials, shrubs, bulbs and even wildflower seeds. Did you know that plants established in the fall and winter grow faster in the spring and require less water when summer comes? This month we ventured out to the UCR Botanic Gardens nestled in the foothills of the Box Springs Mountains on the east side of the University of California, Riverside Campus for their 35th annual fall market and plant sale. This spectacular event features an exciting collection of plants with many varieties including drought tolerant California Native plants as well as plants that attract hummingbirds or butterflies and plants that are suitable for vegetable or flowers gardens. Hebron Community Projects

Upon moving from Cape Town to Citrusdal, South Africa, Neil and Olivia Hall were excited about the prospects of having the opportunity to live and work in the countryside. Although this small town is blessed with picturesque mountains and a vibrant community, the effects of alcoholism, child abuse, HIV Aids, underage pregnancy, poverty and more were evident and right on everyone’s door step! As the years went by, the Hall’s realized the problems and challenges that the community faced, particularly the youth, were only getting worse. This resulted in the birth of Hebron Community Projects (HCP) in 2008, a registered non-profit organization that aims to be a catalyst for positive change in Citrusdal and communities alike. HCP has a particular focus on youth by providing programs and facilities that will allow for qualified personnel to counsel, teach, train, and provide a safe haven for youth at risk. Fred and Rebecca's Classic White Wedding Flowers, Lainston House

Rebecca's bouquet, a classic mix of Avalanche roses, white spray roses and gypsophila. Bridesmaids carried hand tied posies of massed gypsophila. A simple, elegant buttonhole of a single white rose for the men. Corsage of white rose, spray roses and gypsophila for the ladies.  The outdoor ceremony flowers at Lainston House, garden urns filled with an elegant design of massed gypsophila sit either side of the pavilion, a co-ordinating design of massed gyp sits on the ceremony table and the chairs are decorated with little posies of white gypsophila. The aisle is lined with lanterns and is just about to be decorated with scattered fresh rose petals.  The pavilion at Lainston House, decorated with simple designs of massed gypsophila ready for the wedding ceremony. M assed white gypsophila, roses, spray roses and hydrangea atop a tall cocktail vase make a stunning and very elegant high centrepiece for the Dawley Barn...
