Hortiflorexpo Shanghai: The Banksia

Hình ảnh
The brighter the better in some cases, and that’s what we’re loving these days when it comes to banksia. The banksia is a bold and textural bloom that’s displayed in many of our favorite designs. For any season, there’s always a way to make them work no matter what the occasion is. I think the uniqueness of a banksia is what makes it loved by so many of us. When it comes to designing with banksia, the options are seemingly endless. Such an exceptional flower can be transformed by the designer, projecting a different look depending on what else it is paired with it. You can go with natural burgundy, orange or green hues, or add more color to the stems and create a virtual rainbow. I attended the Hortiflorexpo in Shanghai this month, and while in the Lynch Group exhibit, banksias were all the rage. Here are some of the ways they were displayed throughout the booth. What color combination do you like best?

Rainbow in Color

Greens so unsullied you feel calm and invigorated. Bright colored pincushions spring forth from the lush greenery like fireworks. The yellows in the fields are almost neon, the oranges are flamboyant and reds… blazing. All of this natural beauty is set against a vibrant blue sky. This is springtime in Rainbow. Every spring, I’m awe-struck by the beauty of each varying color. I am amazed by the idea that colors so bright and pure happen organically in nature. I see colors I have never seen before, around every hillside. I notice orange and peach pincushions reaching high up to the sky as the sun passes over. Bright bi-colored blooms with long spiky red pins that reach out from their yellow centers. This is the season of amazing color and it permeates all our lives. Let it inspire you and learn what each color means. Green has healing power and is understood to be the most restful and relaxing color for the human eye to view. Green can help enhance vision, stability and endurance. Yell...

Farm Tour: The Poway Valley Garden Club

Hình ảnh
For many farmers and gardeners fall is considered "the forgotten season." It's the time when they put away their tools and equipment and kiss growing things goodbye. But that's certainly not the case here in Southern California and for the Poway Valley Garden Club. Given the abundant varieties of protea, leucadendron and banksia in bloom, you can liberate a neglected interval in the gardening cycle. That was the inspiration I hoped to pass on to these gardeners during their visit to the farm this week. With over 95 members, this club's mission is to promote interest in gardening, improve and beautify their community, and provide garden education and information. During the tour they stopped by the packing house to watch as our crew packed flowers for shipping, made protea bouquets and created festive autumn wreaths. I made it a point to teach them about the amazing array of colorful proteaceae being currently being harvested, showcasing the protea and introducing ...

Farm Friends

The way we see it, everything is better with farm friends, including work. We’re proud to count quite a few two and four-legged animals among the Resendiz Brothers team - shout-out to JJ and Zorro, our Chief Perros, 25+ free range roosters, hens and chicks and 50+ adorable goats - which got us thinking: Why not share them with our flower friends? Not only did they have fun posing for the photos, but we think they go great with all our flowers. Thanks for all the hard work, guys and gals! And, we’ll never forget our beloved friends, Lucky & Zorro! Zorro Lucky

Protea: Fall’s Final Flush

Hình ảnh
It takes just a peek out in the fields to remind us that fall has, indeed, made its way to this side of the equator. I always find that the sky is prettiest in the autumn, it seems to take on a warm golden glow that reminds me of the word ‘harvest’. That awareness as nature yields its final flush and soon the fields will begin anew - is the mood of our latest field trip. There’s something so calming about a pickup full of protea standing tall, blooms to the sky. I thought it would be the perfect way to share the feeling of the season. Each gorgeous protea transforms everyday life here on the farm — such harvesting, hydrating and even transporting—into works of art.
